Anney's Closet
Using household items donated by downsizing seniors, friends of Soroptimists, and other kindhearted folks in our community, we’ve created a “free store” for women and girls who need household items.
Girls and women who are referred to us from advocates at our partner social service agencies have the opportunity to select items from Anney’s Closet that will transform their new apartments into functional and comfortable homes.
Our volunteers work to sort and arrange donated items in the Closet, build relationships with social agencies and the community, and help the visitors pick out items for their new home.
We also sell large pieces of furniture that have been donated to generate funds to operate Anney’s Closet as well as other SIVW programs and services.
The space for Anney’s Closet, four huge storage lockers in an immaculate indoor storage facility, is donated to us by the wonderful owners of West Shore U-Lock.
Who do we help?
When girls sign a Youth Agreement or age out of the foster care system, they head out to begin life on their own…often with only a few clothes or personal items to call their own. Same goes for women fleeing violence, domestic abuse or other unsafe living situations. They have no furniture, household items or “nice things” to set up their new home.
Through our network of social workers, youth and family counselors, and school counselors who watch over girls living in foster care, those pregnant and parenting at a very young age, or women transitioning out of unsafe environments, we connect with those who can benefit from a visit to Anney’s Closet. The agency workers arrange the visit and assist with the shopping, and our volunteers coordinate delivery of furniture to the new home.
